Same song, two different renditions. The one posted here is the famous film version sung by Lata Mangeshkar. See the 1st comment for its older version, sung in semi classical courtesans' style by Rasoolan Bai, a courtesan from Banaras. In the film version, the 2 women enacting the song have played courtesans and the setting is the courtesans' quarters in Calcutta. It also includes some improvised stanzas not sung by Rasoolan Bai. In the film, the lyrics of the song are credited to Shailendra. This shows that Shailendra was familiar with the courtesans' songs.

The setting is of a woman who reprimands her paramour for coming in the early hours of the morning after she has spent a sleepless night. She suspects that he has spent the night with another woman. She refuses to allow him to come near her and says that she doesn't wish to speak to him. Symbolically, this represents the angry reproach of Radha who reprimands Krishna for not coming at the appointed hour. Radha-Krishna motifs were liberally used in the courtesans' quarters in their song-dance-drama presentations.
